Kuttanad Package -FMP- Modernization of Thanneermukkom Bund to manage salinity and minimize Ecological decay- Construction of Central portion of Thanneermukkom Barrage (3rd stage works) in Alappuzha District
Introduction
The project is being constructed for preventing saline water intrusion into the Kuttanad Paddy fields. This barrage was proposed to construct in three stretches for a length of 1402 m connecting Thanneermukkom in Alappuzha district and Vechoor in Kottayam district across the Vembanad Lake. The first two stages, Vechoor side completed in the year 1965 and Thanneermukkom side in 1975 respectively. The first phase had 31 shutters and 2 navigation locks. The second phase had 31 shutters and 1 navigation lock.
But the construction of third stage which is at the middle of lake could not be accomplished at that time. Hence these two stages were connected by an earthen bund (Coffer dam) for the transport of vehicles. Later in the year 2010 M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation submitted a study report to the State Government about the Kuttanad bio-diversity. This Foundation recommended various projects and the construction of the third stage of Thanneermukkom barrage was one of the main projects proposed. The Government sanctioned a project amounting to Rs.180,66,79,202/- for the above mentioned construction of third stage. The third stage has 28 shutters and 1 navigation lock(middle portion connecting first and second phase) having a length of 428m.
