Details of Proposed Projects in Kabini Basin, Wayanad.

The River Cauvery, the largest in South India originates on the eastern slopes of the western ghats and has its catchment spread over the States of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil nadu. Three tributories of the river, namely Kabini, Bhavani and Pambar have portions of their catchments in the State of Kerala. As per  the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal (CWDT) Verdict , Kerala  has been allocated a total of 30 TMC of water for the three sub basins viz: Kabini sub basin – 21 TMC, Bhavani  sub basin – 6 TMC and Pambar sub basin – 3 TMC. 

Kabini Sub –Basin in Kerala lies entirely in Wayanad District. The hilly region of Kabini sub basin is inhabited by substantial tribal population.Water scarcity is a severe problem in the District during the drought period especially in the villages bordering Karnataka State. It is noticed that rainfall in these areas is comparatively lower than remaining area and some part of it comes under rain shadow area. The areas such as

Mullenkolly, Pulpally, Tamitheruvu, Kappiset, Padichira and near by areas come under rain shadow areas. 

Proposed projects in Kabani Basin are as follows

1.Kadamanthodu Irrigation Project – 0.51 TMC.

2.Noolpuzha Irrigation Project – 0.49 TMC

3.Thondar Irrigation Project – 0.30 TMC

4.Perigottupuzha Irrigation Project – 1.35 TMC

5.Thirunelly Irrigation Project – 0.70 TMC

6.Kallampathy Irrigation Project – 1.48 TMC  and

7.Chundalipuzha Irrigation Project – 1.75 TMC 

Feasibility studies of the projects were completed and preliminary surveys are being taken up. Details of Dam and Distribution system will be finalised once the detailed investigation is over. The projects will be taken up in a phased manner and the Kadamanthodu Project and Thondar Project come in the first phase.
