Siruvani Dam

map

The Siruvani Dam is a straight masonry gravity dam, built across the Siruvani river, a tributary of Bhavani river at Mannarkkad Taluk in Palakkad District. Siruvani Dam, constructed in 1984 is used for supplying drinking water to the city of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. The catchment is in the reserve forests of both Kerala and Tamilnadu. Muthikulam hill is situated on the eastern side of the dam and the waterfall from this hill is the main source of the dam.

During 1930, a weir was constructed upstream of the present dam and water was taken to Coimbatore through a 1.80m diameter tunnel. After the formation of States subsequent to Independence and due to the increased demand for water, an agreement was executed in August 1973 between the State Governments for drinking water supply to Coimbatore town and neighboring areas from the Siruvani Dam. The location being in the State of Kerala, the project was executed by the Kerala Public Works Department utilising the funds made available by the Tamil Nadu Government and the work was completed during 1984.

The dam is 225m long with a  maximum height of 57m.
