Moovattupuzha Valley Irrigation Project
The Muvattupuzha Valley Irrigation Project, one of the major projects in Kerala envisages the utilization of the tailrace discharge from the Moolamattom Power House of the Idukki Hydro-Electric Project and the dependable runoff from the catchments of Thodupuzha River. It comprises of an earth cum masonry dam at Malankara in river Thodupuzha, a tributary of Muvattupuzha River and right bank and left bank canal systems to irrigate a cultivable command area of 18173 ha(gross ayacut of 35619 ha), in Idukki, Ernakulam and Kottayam districts. In addition to this, the project envisages to supplement canal water for drinking water supply schemes, industrial benefit to the Hindustan News Print Factory, generation of hydel power at the toe of the dam with an installed capacity of 10.5 M.W and other indirect benefits to Ernakulam, Idukki and Kottayam Districts. The power production commenced from 9/2005 onwards. The project was commissioned on 10.07.2020.
Dam and connected works are completed. Left bank main canal of length 37.100km and right bank main canal of length 28.337km are completed to its full length. Branch canal of length 57.154kmcompleted. Distributories are completed up to 94%. Irrigation potential achieved till date is 33905 Ha and upto date expenditure up is Rs.1087.78 Cr.
CADWM program was implemented in MVIP from July 2012 at a project cost of Rs. 67 crores.Govt. of India has given revised sanction for Rs. 107.29 crores on 3-11-15. The works envisaged are construction of field channels, Micro irrigation, field drains and system correction.The total expenditure is Rs.11.18 crores. Central assistance received up to 28.03.2016 is Rs.99 lakhs and in the year 2020-21, the central assistance received is Rs.2.69 crores.
