Kuttiyadi Irrigation Project (KyIP)

map

Kuttiadi Irrigation project is one of the important irrigation projects in Malabar region and the only one in Kozhikode District of Kerala State. It was envisaged in the Nehruvian period when dams were considered to be temples, keeping in mind the immense contribution of dams towards green revolution and in turn to the food selfsufficiency in India. The project which started in 1962 was partially commissioned in 1973. The project started functioning in full swing since 1993 when it was completed. Original proposed to irrigate an ayacut area of 14568.70 hectares, in Kozhikode, Koyilandy and Vadakara taluks.

A drinking water project with installed capacity of 174 MLD water, from Kuttiyadi irrigation project reservoir is completed and now 150 MLD of water is drawing from the reservoir to supply water to major parts of Kozhikode district under the JBIC scheme. On request sufficient water is released to Kuttiady river through the Spill way and Canal sluice to reduce the salinity near intake well of Kerala Water Authority at Gulikappuzha pumping station in Velomgramapanchayath for supply of drinking water to Vatakara Municipality and adjoining gramapanchayaths.

General Details of Project

The reservoir has a water-spread area of 1052 ha. and has got a live capacity of 113.44 MM3 at FRL of 44.41 m. The maximum height of the gravity dam above the deepest bed level is 35.36 metres. The water distribution started in 1973. The L.B. Main canal is of 40.02 KM in length and RB Main canal is of 34.27 Km in length. Total length of 10 Nos. branch canals is 136.325 Km and the length of distributaries and sub distributaries are 330 Km.

Details of Irrigation Network

Main canal is designed for a discharge of 18.38 M3/sec. to serve an ayacut of 14568.70 ha. at a duty of 70acres/cusecs.
