CHERAMANGALAM SCHEME
The Cheramangalam Scheme commissioned during 1951 is a diversion scheme in Palakkad district with a weir in Gayathri River. The scheme irrigates an ayacut of 1180 Ha in AlathurTaluk. The Anicut is 115.976 m in length and the reservoir has a water spread area of 4.14 sq Km and live storage capacity of 43.90Mm³ at FRL of 108.2m. . The main canal is having (1) a main canal of length15.540 Km and it has three branches (1) 16 A branch canal of length about 4.80 km Km (2) Erakulam Branch canal of 3.00 km length and 3) Vadakethara Branch canal of length 2.200 km feeding an ayacut area of 1180 Ha .The command area of the project lies in panchayaths of Melarcode, Erimayoor ,Alathur, Kavassery
Subsequent to completion of Gayathri Project, ie, Meenkara and Chulliyar, the flow in Gayatri River was reduced considerably at the region and thus the water available at the anicut was insufficient to meet the requirement of Cheramangalam scheme. The system depends on therefore in order to meet the water requirement for this ayacut and to supplement for the river flow for irrigation in this ayacut, a discharge at the rate of about 0.70 to 1.10 cumecs from Malampuzha reservoir through its LBC has to be maintained during the crop period.
